How do we check out financial groups that arrange loans?

We recently put an experienced commercial real estate developer together with a financial group that presented an LOI to the developer. Our job was to do the search work, initial conversations, explain the need and make the introductions. The financial group indicates that they cannot provide references, although they of course want a down payment on an origination fee.
